International Day of Education — Knowledge Is Power

International Day of Education — Knowledge Is Power

As 24 January marks the International Day of Education, we reaffirm a core belief at MAUD: Knowledge Is Power.

Health equity is achievable when people have access to knowledge—and when education is embedded at the heart of care.

That’s why MAUD delivers education-led medical care, empowering individuals and communities with the information they need to make informed decisions about their health and well-being.

Knowledge is power is not just a statement but an acted belief.

Education is a human right, a public good, and a public responsibility. Recognizing its transformative role in peace and development, the United Nations General Assembly proclaimed 24 January as the International Day of Education.

Education is a Human Right

The right to education is enshrined in Article 26 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, which calls for free and compulsory elementary education. The Convention on the Rights of the Child goes further, affirming that higher education should be accessible to all.

Education Is Key to Sustainable Development

With the adoption of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, the global community recognized education as essential to achieving all 17 goals. Sustainable Development Goal 4 commits to ensuring inclusive and equitable quality education and promoting lifelong learning opportunities for all by 2030.

The Challenge Ahead

Education opens pathways out of poverty and toward healthier, more secure futures. Yet the reality remains stark:

  • 244 million children and adolescents are out of school

  • 617 million cannot read or do basic math

  • Fewer than 40% of girls in sub-Saharan Africa complete lower secondary school

  • Nearly 4 million refugee children and youth are denied access to education

These gaps are unacceptable. Without inclusive, equitable, quality education and lifelong learning opportunities, the world will not achieve gender equality—or break the cycles of poverty that leave millions behind.

At MAUD, we remain committed to advancing health equity through education—because when people are informed, communities are stronger, and futures are healthier.
