MAUD Medical Introduces Fotona IntimaLase®: A Non-Surgical Treatment for Vaginal Laxity in Calgary

Vaginal health changes throughout a woman’s life - but those changes are not always openly discussed.

Pregnancy, vaginal childbirth, aging and changes in the tissues of the pelvic floor can contribute to a feeling of vaginal looseness or reduced vaginal tightness. For some women, these changes are barely noticeable. For others, vaginal laxity can affect comfort, confidence, sexual satisfaction and overall quality of life.

At MAUD Medical Clinic in Calgary, we believe women deserve access to evidence-informed options for intimate health concerns without embarrassment or stigma.

That is why we are excited to introduce the Fotona TimeWalker® II IntimaLaser™ to MAUD Medical Clinic, expanding the non-surgical treatment options available through our vaginal health centre.

One of the treatments available with this advanced laser platform is IntimaLase®, a minimally invasive, incision-free laser treatment designed specifically for vaginal relaxation syndrome, also commonly described as vaginal laxity.

What Is Vaginal Laxity?

Vaginal laxity refers to a sensation of decreased tightness or looseness within the vaginal canal.

It can occur for a number of reasons, but is commonly associated with vaginal childbirth and natural aging. Pregnancy and delivery can stretch vaginal and pelvic tissues, while changes in collagen and connective tissue over time may further affect tissue strength and elasticity.

Vaginal laxity is not simply a cosmetic concern.

Some women report changes in sensation during intercourse or a feeling that their vaginal tissues are different than they were before childbirth or aging. These changes may affect sexual confidence, intimacy and quality of life.

And while vaginal laxity is common, women have historically had relatively few options to discuss or address it.

What Is IntimaLase®?

IntimaLase® is Fotona’s non-ablative Er:YAG laser treatment for vaginal laxity.

Unlike surgery, the treatment does not involve incisions or removal of vaginal tissue.

IntimaLase uses Fotona’s proprietary SMOOTH® technology to deliver controlled thermal energy to vaginal tissue. This gentle heating stimulates collagen remodelling and the production of new collagen within the vaginal mucosa and collagen-rich supporting tissues.

Collagen is one of the proteins responsible for the structure, strength and elasticity of tissue.

By encouraging collagen remodelling, IntimaLase is designed to improve tissue structure and produce a tightening effect within the vaginal canal.

This provides women with a non-surgical option when vaginal laxity is affecting their comfort, confidence or sexual wellness.

How Does Fotona IntimaLase® Work?

MAUD Medical uses the Fotona TimeWalker® II IntimaLaser™, a laser platform developed specifically for gynecological treatments.

For IntimaLase, Fotona uses a 2940 nm Er:YAG laser operating in its proprietary non-ablative SMOOTH® mode.

Rather than cutting or surgically removing tissue, controlled laser energy creates a thermal effect within the vaginal tissue.

This thermal stimulation encourages existing collagen fibres to remodel while stimulating the formation of new collagen.

Over time, these changes can contribute to improved tissue firmness and tightening of the vaginal canal.

The TimeWalker II IntimaLaser also incorporates specialized technology and treatment handpieces designed for gynecological applications, allowing laser energy to be delivered in a controlled and consistent manner.

Is IntimaLase® Surgery?

No.

One of the most significant advantages of IntimaLase is that it provides a non-surgical approach to vaginal tightening.

There are:

  • No surgical incisions

  • No stitches

  • No general anesthesia

  • No removal of vaginal tissue

Fotona states that patients can return to their normal everyday activities immediately following treatment.

For women who are interested in addressing vaginal laxity but are not ready for — or do not require — surgery, IntimaLase may provide another option to discuss with a qualified healthcare provider.

How Many IntimaLase® Treatments Are Needed?

According to Fotona’s IntimaLase treatment information, two treatment sessions are usually recommended.

However, treatment should always begin with an individualized assessment to determine whether IntimaLase is appropriate and what treatment schedule may be recommended.

Collagen remodelling is a biological process, meaning changes can continue to develop following treatment as the tissue responds.

Your MAUD Medical provider will discuss what you can realistically expect from treatment and whether additional or maintenance treatments may be appropriate.

What Does the Research Say About IntimaLase®?

Fotona reports clinical research evaluating IntimaLase and its SMOOTH® laser technology for vaginal laxity.

According to Fotona, clinical results have demonstrated improvements in vaginal tightness, sexual satisfaction and patient quality of life following treatment.

Fotona also provides access to a compendium of clinical studies examining its SMOOTH® laser technology in gynecology for healthcare providers and patients interested in learning more about the research.

While these findings are encouraging, every patient is different. No medical treatment can guarantee a particular result, and vaginal symptoms can have multiple causes.

This is one of the reasons MAUD believes vaginal laser treatments should begin with appropriate assessment rather than simply treating a symptom.

Is Vaginal Laxity the Same as Pelvic Floor Weakness?

Not necessarily.

A feeling of vaginal looseness can involve the vaginal tissues, pelvic floor muscles, pelvic organ support — or a combination of factors.

That distinction matters.

Laser treatment does not replace pelvic floor physiotherapy when pelvic floor muscle rehabilitation is needed, nor does it replace medical or surgical evaluation for other gynecological conditions.

At MAUD Medical, our approach is to look at vaginal health more comprehensively and help determine which treatment — or combination of treatments — makes sense.

For some patients, that may include pelvic floor physiotherapy. For others, IntimaLase may be appropriate. Some patients may benefit from both approaches.

Why MAUD Medical Added Fotona Laser Technology

MAUD was created around a simple idea: women should have a place to talk openly about vaginal health.

Too many women live with intimate health concerns because they assume their symptoms are simply something they have to tolerate after childbirth or as they age.

We want to change that conversation.

Bringing the Fotona TimeWalker® II IntimaLaser™ to MAUD allows us to expand the treatment options available to women seeking support for intimate health concerns.

The platform is specifically designed for gynecological applications and incorporates Er:YAG and Nd:YAG laser technologies, allowing trained healthcare providers to perform a range of specialized treatments.

IntimaLase® for vaginal laxity is one of the Fotona treatments now being introduced at MAUD Medical.

A More Open Conversation About Vaginal Health

Changes to the vagina after childbirth or with aging are incredibly common.

They also deserve the same thoughtful medical conversation we give to every other part of the body.

If something has changed and it is affecting your comfort, confidence, intimacy or quality of life, you should be able to ask about it.

There is no obligation to treat vaginal laxity simply because it exists. But for women who are bothered by their symptoms and want to explore treatment, there are now more options than there were in the past.

IntimaLase® at MAUD Medical Clinic provides Calgary and Alberta patients with access to an incision-free, non-surgical laser treatment specifically designed for vaginal laxity.

The first step is determining whether it is the right treatment for you.

Because vaginal health is health.
