Your Body Already Makes GLP-1: Dr. Lisa Ma Explains the Biology of Fullness

We have a YouTube superstar in our midst!

We’re incredibly excited to celebrate Dr. Lisa Ma, MAUD physician, who has taken her passion for patient education beyond the clinic with her YouTube channel, Thrivology with Lisa.

For those of us who know Dr. Ma, this feels like a very natural extension of the physician she already is.

Healthcare Should Be About More Than a Prescription

One of the reasons Dr. Ma joined MAUD was our shared belief in education-led healthcare.

We believe that a healthcare appointment shouldn't simply end with a diagnosis, prescription or treatment plan. Patients deserve to understand why something may be happening in their bodies, what their options are, and what they can do to support their health over the long term.

Dr. Ma brings that philosophy to her practice every day.

Her approach considers the whole person and recognizes that health is influenced by much more than a single number, symptom or diagnosis. Nutrition, movement, sleep, mental health, habits, behaviour and our everyday environments all matter.

And now, she’s bringing those conversations to a much bigger audience.

Your Body Already Makes GLP-1: Dr. Lisa Ma Explains the Biology of Fullness

You’ve probably heard of Ozempic®, Wegovy®, Mounjaro® or Zepbound®. GLP-1 medications have become part of everyday conversations about weight management—but there’s something many people may not realize:

Your body already makes GLP-1.

Our very own Dr. Lisa Ma, MAUD physician, is taking health education beyond the clinic with a new three-part YouTube series exploring GLP-1, the biology of fullness, nutrition and sustainable weight management.

And we couldn’t be more excited to see her doing it.

At MAUD, we talk a lot about education-led healthcare. We believe healthcare is better when people understand what is happening in their bodies and why. Dr. Ma shares that philosophy, and her dedication to making medical information understandable and practical is one of the many reasons we’re so fortunate to have her as part of our physician team.

GLP-1 Is More Than a Medication

GLP-1 stands for glucagon-like peptide-1, a hormone that our bodies naturally produce, particularly in the gut after we eat.

It plays several important roles, including helping regulate blood sugar and contributing to the signals between the digestive system and brain that influence appetite and feelings of fullness.

The medications receiving so much attention today work by acting on the same biological pathway. But Dr. Ma's first video starts somewhere different: understanding the biology we already have.

Rather than beginning with medication or simply telling people to “eat less,” she explores how we can think more intentionally about the body's natural fullness system.

Weight Management Is About More Than Eating Less

This is an important part of Dr. Ma's message.

Weight management can so easily become focused on restriction: eat less, count more, avoid certain foods and rely on willpower.

But our bodies—and our relationships with food—are much more complicated than that.

Dr. Ma introduces a different way of thinking about nutrition: what if we intentionally worked with our biology and psychology rather than constantly fighting against them?

Understanding hunger and fullness, choosing foods that nourish us, building meals that satisfy us and developing habits we can realistically maintain are all part of creating an approach that can last.

As Dr. Ma puts it in her video, if we're going to work toward weight loss, we want the results to last while still feeling full, happy and nourished.

That is a message we can get behind.

The Foundations Still Matter

One of the things we appreciate most about Dr. Ma's approach is that she brings the conversation back to the foundations of health.

Nutrition matters.

Movement matters.

Sleep matters.

Mindset matters.

And the small habits we repeat consistently matter.

These aren't particularly flashy concepts—and they certainly don't generate the same headlines as the latest medication—but they remain incredibly important pieces of our overall health.

Medications can be valuable tools when clinically appropriate, but good healthcare should also give people the knowledge and practical strategies they need to understand and support their health beyond a prescription.

From Biology to the Dinner Plate

This first video is only the beginning.

Dr. Ma has designed the GLP-1 discussion as a three-part series, taking viewers from understanding the science to actually using that knowledge in everyday life.

In Part One, she explores GLP-1, our natural fullness system and ways nutrition can support the biology involved in appetite and satiety.

In Part Two, she plans to take that science and combine it with psychology to create a simple framework for making meals that are healthy, easy, satisfying and enjoyable.

And in Part Three, she'll make it even more practical by walking viewers through how to build a plate for breakfast, lunch and dinner.

We love this progression because health education shouldn't end with telling someone what they should do.

People also need to understand why it matters and how to actually do it.

This Is What We Mean by Education-Led Healthcare

There is an extraordinary amount of health information available online. There is also an extraordinary amount of misinformation.

That's why we're particularly excited to see physicians like Dr. Ma creating accessible educational content.

At MAUD, education-led healthcare means creating space for questions, helping patients understand their options and giving people reliable information that allows them to participate more meaningfully in their own healthcare.

Whether we're talking about hormones, menopause, sexual health, pelvic health, nutrition, weight or another aspect of health, we believe knowledge matters.

Dr. Ma embodies that beautifully.

Our MAUD Physician Is Officially a YouTube Superstar

Okay, we may be slightly biased.

But we're incredibly fortunate to know Dr. Lisa Ma and to have her practising as part of the physician team at MAUD Medical Clinic.

Her dedication to patient education doesn't stop when an appointment ends. She's taking what she knows and making it accessible to people who may never have the opportunity to sit across from her in an exam room.

And this three-part series is a perfect example of why that matters.

GLP-1 medications may be everywhere right now, but Dr. Ma is asking us to look beyond the headlines and understand the fascinating biology that's been inside our bodies all along.
